This article was contributed by Howard A. Liebman, Ph.D., Superintendent of Schools, Smart Horizons Career Online Education
A SOLUTION FOR CHANGES IN ATB LEGISLATION - ED2GO, PART OF CENGAGE LEARNING, ANNOUNCES THE RECENT LAUNCH OF THE “BRIDGE TO START” ONLINE HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM FOR POST-SECONDARY INSTITUTIONS
Education To Go (http://ed2golive.com/cohs/pages/career-online-high-school/home.php), part of Cengage Learning, has recently launched the new “Bridge to Start” online high school program as a means of enabling millions of students to graduate from an AdvancED/SACS accredited online high school and continue their education in a post-secondary institution. ed2go is a leading provider of online courses for adult and continuing education students with over two million students enrolled in various courses.
In March of 2011, Smart Horizons Career Online Education (SHCOE) and ed2go joined forces to launch Career Online High School (COHS). COHS was established as a special high school division within ed2go’s global online system, and now serves as the foundation for the new Bridge to Start program.

With all the changes in the regulatory environment, it’s hard not to associate compliance with rules but is compliance just about following rules? The dictionary says compliance is the tendency to yield readily to others, especially in a weak and subservient way. This definition suggests that compliance is reluctant and/or forced obedience but it misses the point. So, what is the point?
Every career college, regardless of federal regulation, adopts its own mission, vision, and values as its guiding principles but how does any organization nurture a culture that aligns with its values? Rules, regulations and policies are a statement of expectations and they are tools used to shape culture and encourage behaviors that align with institutional values. Compliance, then, shouldn’t be viewed or defined as reluctant obedience, but rather willful acceptance and appreciation of the organization’s culture of which an employee is a part. Compliance is not about following a checklist of rules so much as it is about the spirit of the rules. To put it simply, compliance is about doing the right thing for students.
The next time you participate in compliance training, remember what it’s really about and remember your commitment to do the right thing for students. Watch this powerful, positive video that truly encompasses what compliance is about and be proud in knowing that the amazing art and video editing you’re about to watch is the talent of a career college graduate – Watch and share now!
