FAPSC History

The Florida Association of Postsecondary Schools and Colleges has represented, educated, and promoted our members since 1956.

1956:

It all began on June 28 with the creation of the Florida Association of Private Schools (FAPS) in Dade County.

     Why? To ensure excellence in Florida’s private, career-oriented schools

1956-1975:

A Board of Directors is established.

     Why? To respond to unfair legislation, and later, to be proactive in the legislative process

The state licensing process is established.

     Why? To ensure quality standards for its schools & serve as a model for other states' career education

Training workshops are launched.

     Why? To ensure professional development for members

1976-1979:

FAPS & the State of Florida launch "Career Awareness Week" in October.

     Why? To promote career education

Associate membership is opened up to industry, government, and business representatives.

     Why? To further represent the needs of career schools

A monthly newsletter - "Update" - is launched.

     Why? To better inform members

FAPS is awarded "Outstanding State Association" award by National Association of Trade and Technical Schools (NATTS).

     Why? Bragging rights!

"Career Alert," a quarterly publication for high school guidance counselors, takes shape.

     Why? To provide a means for members to publish news, events, programs of study, job placements, faculty information, etc.

FAPS members attend large education conference sponsored by Florida Postsecondary Education Commission & the Education Commission of the United States.

     Why? To study challenges in postsecondary education

FAPS invites a representative of Florida DOE to its board meeting for the first time & Charles O'Malley attends.

     Why? To build relationship with FL DOE and allow for improved understanding of career schools

1980-1989:

FAPS creates Dept. of Accredited Schools & begins offering accreditation workshops.

     Why? To encourage and assist schools in becoming accredited

FAPS creates annual awards program.

     Why? To recognize excellence in our members

FAPS gains a lot of recognition: 1st place for Member Services at NATTS/ACIS Idea Fair; 1st place for Member Recruitment; 1st place for Publications; and 2nd place for Membership Services at 6th Annual State Associations Workshop.

     Why? Bragging Rights!

FAPS becomes FAAPS - Florida Association of Accredited Private Schools.

     Why? To bring recognition to the fact that most members are accredited

FAAPS partners with FVA - the Florida Vocational Association

     Why? To allow members of FAAPS to automatically become members of FVA & to foster unity between public and private sectors

By 1989, FAAPS scholarship program exceeds $1 million in tuition value.

     Why? To serve and assist

FAAPS hosts inaugural legislation reception at the Capitol.

     Why? To foster relationships and improve legislative goals for members

1990-2000:

FAAPS recognized by Gov. Martinez & Cabinet for support of landmark legislation. The regulatory rules serve as nationwide model for quality standards.

     Why? Bragging Rights!

Florida Legislature passes VSAG - Vocational Student Assistance Grant.

     Why? To provide needy students grants up to $1000 for eligible diploma programs in public or private postsecondary schools

FAAPS hires a Legislative and Gov't. Affairs Coordinator & appoints Strategic Planning Task Force.

     Why? To address sector issues with FL DOE, FL Education Commissioner, and OSFA

FAAPS becomes FAPSC - Florida Association of Postsecondary Schools and Colleges in 1992.

     Why? To more accurately reflect membership that includes colleges

2000-2010:

The FAPSC newsletter goes electronic and is renamed the eFlash.

     Why? To provide more timely information to members

The FAPSC PAC is established, the CIE becomes part of the HECC, and the ABLE grant is established.

     Why? To formalize FAPSC's participation in legislation and to help students and members

FAPSC adds a "Central Conference" during the winter months.

     Why? To offer more opportunity for growth to members.

FAPSC celebrates 50 years in 2006!

     Happy Anniversary!

2010-Today:

"Spirit of FAPSC Award" and Hall of Fame launch.

     Why? To recognize excellence and honor our past

Nursing and cosmetology workshops begin around the state.

     Why? To expand outreach and assist sector schools

Recognition of "Champions of Students" begins.

     Why? To celebrate the positive impact of our members

Webinars begin and expand.

     Why? To diversify continuing education formats

FAPSC garners sector support against gainful employment legislation.

     Why? To resist unfair treatment of members

FAPSC representation on Higher Education Coordinating Council (HECC) begins

     Why? To help ensure members are represented appropriately in governmental affairs
