FAPSC provides leadership, support and advocacy for quality career education.
Hello FAPSC members, colleagues, friends,FAPSC Cosmetology working group will host a summer workshop on August 18, 2014. This event will be held at Hollywood Institute of Beauty Careers - Casselberry campus.
I wanted to share my thoughts on the direction that I am advocating we all should be following this year as participative and engaged FAPSC members. It is fairly straightforward “call to action.”
First, let’s all clearly understand that the specter of “Gainful Employment” is out there on our horizon and it appears to be a stormy day ahead. However, there are actions that each of us can take to potentially minimize the impact to our educational sector, most specifically, to the students that we serve.
We need Washington, and everyone who talks to our elected officials in Washington to be advocates for what we do for our students. We want them to understand our students and their educational needs. Our students are career changers, older than a normal high school graduate, career oriented and not fully severed by the current “traditional” postsecondary educational market. And yes, the socio-economics of this population is vastly different than that of the students and their families that are participating in “traditional” postsecondary education. Our students are “non-traditional” and in order to serve them best we are “non-traditional.” We are what our free market economy requires to support this large sector of the population of the United States of America that does not fit into the “traditional” postsecondary educational model, but yet requires postsecondary education to become skilled in their craft, personally satisfied and productive participants in our economy. This award is intended to be given throughout the year to recognize those who, through a single act, or series of acts, has truly demonstrated the Spirit of our organization. Someone who took the time to mentor, to support, to assist, and all without looking for anything in return. Doing something good because they could and it needed to be done. Going above and beyond to help a student, to help the community, to help another school, to help the sector. And all, without expecting anything in return. The FAPSC 2014 Annual Conference was a tremendous success! A big thanks and word of gratitude to everyone who participated in “reaching new heights in higher education” July 29 – August 1 at the Turnberry Isle Miami (Aventura). Administrators and Faculty participated in broad array of professional educational sessions and top-notch training.
The conference week began on Tuesday, July 29 at the 6th Annual Jay Lambeth Memorial Golf Tournament where 36 golfers took on the challenges of the beautiful Miller Course. The annual conference exhibit hall provided a look at some of the most cutting edge and awesome products and services available to our sector with 72 booths displayed.
Administrators spent two days listening and learning from experts on the most critical topics affecting postsecondary schools and colleges. Keynote presenters provided insights and overviews setting a perfect tone for all of the many breakout sessions including administration/management, admissions, education, financial aid, career/student services, distance education and other special topics including nursing. Faculty members enjoyed an educational and fun day of professional development in topics from instructional skills, liberal arts, allied health and nursing.
FAPSC greatly appreciates the many sponsors of this educational conference, whose contributions make the event possible. Thanks also to the many volunteers and speakers for offering their time, expertise and talents to our organization during the FAPSC 2014 Annual Conference.
