A Farewell Message from the Executive Director

The Executive Director of the Florida Association of Postsecondary Schools and Colleges, Mrs. Kathryn K. Mizereck, will be leaving her position as of October 8, 2012.

Dear FAPSC Members and Supporters:

It is with mixed emotions that I leave my position as executive director of FAPSC. Effective October 8, I will be the Education Staff Director in the Florida House of Representatives under the leadership of Speaker Designate Will Weatherford. I am honored by Rep. Weatherford’s confidence in me, and look forward to serving the citizens of Florida in this new role.

FAPSC has a long history – more than 55 years – of representing Florida’s licensed postsecondary colleges and schools. I have enjoyed working with all of you to advance FAPSC’ goals and objectives. During my time as your executive director we have diversified our membership and board representation, established a strong financial position, launched an active network of committees that fosters ideas and member participation, and developed a strong base of volunteers for ongoing and new initiatives.

As I reflect on the last five years, I recall the work to establish our mission statement and guiding values: FAPSC provides leadership, support and advocacy for quality career education, based on the values of accountability, access, choice, integrity and professionalism.

In addition, at each meeting of the Board of Directors we have used seven measures of success to evaluate our work:
1. Customer service culture
2. Alignment of products and services with mission
3. Data driven strategies
4. Dialogue and engagement
5. CEO as broker of ideas
6. Organizational adaptability
7. Alliance building

I hope you will continue to work together as a sector – THE BIG TEAM – to advance the cause. It has been my pleasure to serve as your executive director, and I am proud of the work you do on behalf of our students. Thank you for your support – I will miss the many colleagues and friends I have discovered and that I sincerely treasure.

New Manager (Cadet Training) – for managers new to their position and/or new to the private postsecondary education sector.
New to Florida Sector (Captain Training) – for managers new to the state of Florida.

Got a great idea for a session presentation at a FAPSC Conference?

Tell us all about it! Submit your conference session proposal online.
What makes a great breakout session? Specifically FAPSC looks for relevant, timely, dynamic, effective and interactive breakout sessions for our administrators and faculty. If you have a terrific idea for a conference session - just take a few moments to compile your proposal and submit it using the online forms.

All session proposals for the 2013 Central Conference are due Dec. 21.
All session proposals for the 2013 Annual Conference are due May 1, 2013.

Note: There are a limited number of breakout sessions available – it is strongly encouraged to submit proposals early.

FAPSC 2013 Annual Awards Program


The FAPSC awards committee is eager to announce that nominations may now be submitted for the 2013 Annual Awards Program. The deadline to submit nominations is May 13. But it’s never too early to nominate someone from your campus for one of these honors! Administrator, Faculty, Graduate and School winners will be recognized at the 2013 FAPSC Annual Conference (July 2013 – Turnberry Isle Miami).

* All nominators who submit nominations before
March 31, 2013
will be automatically entered to win one FREE Annual Conference registration

* All nominators will automatically be entered into a prize drawing for a great gift basket (announced during the  Administrator Conference Awards Ceremony)

* Administrator and Faculty Award Winners and their Nominators will also each receive a $100 discount on conference registration fees

* The school that submits the most nominations (among all of the categories combined) will receive a FREE Faculty Conference registration

Update from the FAPSC Nursing Committee

The FAPSC nursing committee has developed a membership of leading experts in the management of proprietary nursing programs. The committee, comprised of nursing deans and directors, campus presidents and faculty, have introduced several new initiatives to help FAPSC members improve their nursing program outcomes.

The nursing committee is proud to introduce NCLEX improvement solutions, faculty development and faculty, dean and director orientation programs. In addition, the committee will provide education and support in integrating simulation into nursing curriculum to improve student performance. Each program will be further introduced in November.

If your nursing program is having challenges or questions, please do not hesitate to contact the FAPSC nursing committee for support and introduction to some of our opportunities.

Innovation in Postsecondary Education

A survey commissioned by Dell, which was released in September, revealed that 63 percent of U.S. teachers believe their students know how to use technology better than they do. Technology is merely one component of the evolving landscape of education but this survey indicates something that many would say is intuitive – educators are struggling to use new technology as well as integrate it into the classroom. As we have shifted from the traditional 18-22 year-old full-time undergraduate student residing on campus to the adult learner, learning preferences and needs have also dramatically shifted. Have traditional classroom structures and teaching strategies adapted to the new face of higher education?

In an article published in the Journal of Information Systems Education entitled, Using Web 2.0 to Support the Active Learning Experience, Jo Williams makes the argument that the traditional classroom structure as well as teaching strategies have been challenged by students' learning needs and preferences for digital literacy, experiential learning, interactivity, and immediacy in all areas of course design and delivery. In order for students to be actively involved, they must use higher order thinking, including analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. If today’s instructor is to meet the needs of today’s students, they must expand their instructional formats to include the latest technologies and learning theories.

For those interested in learning more, two new courses are available in the FAPSC Online Training Center. Those courses are ED203 – Technology Integration for Instructors and ED204 – Tomorrow’s Learning Environment Today.

Bravo’s Blow Out and Shear Genius Star, Jonathan Antin, Visits The Spa at Daytona College

October 5, 2012—Ormond Beach, Fla.—Daytona College announces world-renowned hairstylist Jonathan Antin, who has starred in highly-acclaimed television shows from ABC’s Extreme Makeover to Bravo’s Blow Out and Shear Genius, will visit the school’s campus at 425 S. Nova Road in Ormond Beach on October 23-24 to share the hottest trends from the world of styling with the school’s Cosmetology students. During his visit, Antin will work directly with students and clients at The Spa at Daytona College, offering area residents an opportunity to have a celebrity stylist consult on their hair style.

Full Sail University Announces 2012 Hall of Fame Induction Class

October 01, 2012- WINTER PARK, FL, - Full Sail University is proud to announce the 2012 Full Sail University Hall of Fame inductees comprised of six graduates recognized for their outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment, media, and the arts. A weeklong series of events including an induction ceremony to celebrate and acknowledge these latest additions to the hall is scheduled to take place in early 2013.
