Herzing University becomes a nonprofit organization
January 02, 2015
Herzing University, one of Wisconsin's oldest and largest for-profit career colleges, has converted to nonprofit status.
The transition makes the Milwaukee-based institution, which has some 6,000 students, and campuses in eight states, a tax-exempt educational institution under section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code.
The move comes in the wake of new federal regulations on for-profit schools that drew widespread opposition from the industry.
It also means Herzing will no longer be subject to the oversight of Wisconsin's Educational Approval Board, which two years ago broached a short-lived regulatory proposal that Herzing said was "grossly unfair and would be catastrophic" to for-profit schools.
Herzing announced its transition in a brief news release Friday. A Herzing representative could not be reached to comment further on the institution's move.

With the start of 2014, the FLDOC Online Campus program is being offered to a total of seven institutions throughout the state. Wardens are hopeful that the dual career training plus high school diploma program will keep offenders from returning to prison once released.
“We are preparing the students for a successful transition into the community with a high school diploma and a career certificate,” said Darlene Lumpkin, Assistant Warden at Lowell Annex, where 27 women have graduated from the program thus far. “That combination improves their chances of finding a job and becoming productive members of society, thus lowering the recidivism rate.”

Florida Department of Corrections Celebrates 100th Graduate of Online High School Diploma Program
February 25, 2014
A recent scene at Madison Correctional Institution was not what you would expect of a state penitentiary. Eighteen men lined up to walk across a stage and shake hands with the prison’s warden as well as a superintendent of a school district. These men were 18 of the Florida Department of Corrections 22 most recent success stories—inmates who had completed their high school education from an Internet-based program offered via high-security computer workstations inside of the prison.
The program, now live at seven correctional institutions across the state, is the first of its kind. It enables inmates to complete a high school diploma plus credentialed career certificate online. Delivering the program online drastically reduces costs for the prison by eliminating the need for seat time, classroom space, and additional staffing. While security concerns have left the correctional community reluctant to adapt Internet-based programs in spite of the cost savings, Smart Horizons Career Online Education—the district that delivers the program—developed the technology to eliminate that risk.
Datamark Changes Name to Helix Education
February 13, 2014
Salt Lake City, UT — Datamark, a longtime leader in data-driven enrollment marketing, today announced that it has changed its name to Helix Education, reflecting its growth and expansion across the student lifecycle. The company has broadened its technology and service solutions, which are underpinned by big data, to help schools find, enroll, retain and teach students.
“As Helix Education, we are redefining what it means to effectively support the needs of students throughout the entire education experience, making it more productive and meaningful,” said Matthew Schnittman, president and CEO of Helix Education. “There are so many opportunities to connect with and track students, from the first time they inquire about a program, throughout the admissions and learning process. Through technology and big data, schools can gain greater visibility into each student’s progress. They can make better decisions – decisions that are relevant to students’ needs along the way – and in turn, achieve better outcomes.”
In 2013, the company acquired the technology assets of Altius Education with the intention of further developing the infrastructure. This includes enrollment management and student retention systems, as well as Helix, a competency-based online learning platform recognized by EDUCAUSE and the Bill & Melinda Gates foundation as a promising technology to support breakthrough learning models.
