What's At Risk?

Due to the recent Senate and the Department of Education tightening up regulation to ensure that students attending “for-profit” institutions better understand their debt loads.

Career College Central joined with the Association of Private Sector Colleges and Universities to bring you a special edition of Career College Central magazine featuring more than 120 graduate and employer success stories from across the nation. More than 2,000 campuses were asked to contribute stories to this magazine, which should give you an idea of the career education sector’s expansiveness. We received more than 1,000 replies, and the evidence has continued rolling in well after our print deadline.

There were more than 10 graduates featured from Florida including FAPSC Graduate of the Year Jeremaine Jones.  You can read all of their stories by click on this link.

Region II Meet Your Candidates Event Great Success!

The Meet the Candidates event at Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts on October 6, 2010 from 3-5pm was a huge success.  We had about 12 candidates and 35  guests from various schools within region II (Broward County).

Opening comments from FAPSC president, Wayne Slater and Host Region II Chair Julie Orloff, and campus President Bob Kane. Candidates were introduced and talked for a couple of minutes and then the rest of the time was spent with the schools greeting and talking with each other.

If you missed this event here's what you missed.

FAPSC 2010 Spotlight on Award Winner

Each year FAPSC opens nominations to the general membership to honor colleagues in the career college sector.  These awards are announced at our annual conference.  This year our conference was held in Hollywood, Florida on July 13-16, 2010.  Since some of you did not get a chance to attend this event we will highlight an award winner each month in our e-Flash. This month we will highlight our Graduate of the Year Jeremaine Jones

Jeremaine Jones is a retired United States Army Corporal, serving in Korea, Germany and in 2002 he defended our county in Iraq. After returning to the states to his wife Mary, and three daughters Nakia, Charmaine, and Jessica; he left South Carolina headed for Jacksonville, Florida to become a Merchant Marine.

After a car accident while en-route to Jacksonville, he felt helpless. With the encouragement of his wife, he made the decision to change his life!

The day he struggled to his wheelchair was the day when he decided to return to Everest University to complete his degree.

Mr. Jones his family have found peace, strength and the will to live. He has also found a new career.  His enjoyment in learning has led him to pursue his bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice.

He says he has two choices in life, he can either accept his situation or he can sit and do nothing. He has chosen to live, and it is to the benefit of his teachers, staff, and classmates at Everest University that he made that choice.

To read more about Jeremaine please click here to read his story as he was featured in the October 3, 2010 issue of the The Floirda Times Union.

Congratulations, Jeremaine!

Campus Emergency Response Plans- A Primer on the Department’s New Rules

By Stephen T. Chema II, Esq.

Because of the well publicized school shootings that took place at Virginia Tech in 2007 and Northern Illinois University in 2008, Congress devoted significant attention to issues of campus crime and campus safety when it began working on the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act in 2008. The Congressional desire for safer campuses ultimately resulted in provisions in the Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008 (HEOA) which included new requirements for how institutions should prepare for and handle emergencies on campus. Among many other changes, the HEOA added the requirement that institutions prepare a policy statement describing their emergency response and evacuation procedures, including the use of electronic and cellular communication (if appropriate). The HEOA called on institutions to “immediately notify” the campus community of a significant emergency or dangerous situation involving an immediate threat, as well as to publicize the institution’s emergency response and evacuation procedures and to test such procedures on an annual basis. The ThinkBuildLive Success Strategy

Life at ThinkBuildLive Success has been very busy since Gainful Employment (as we're receiving lots of interest in our "total student success" program as a result of this regulation) and how our program, ThinkBuildLive Success, comprehensively addresses such.

Our series of books for ground and online campuses and the accompanying training and resources that we provide our clients have established a new model for Student Success best practices.  TBLS is a critical component for staying in compliance with the new Gainful Employment regulations; making sure that your students secure jobs, excel in those jobs, and earn the income required to pay-down their student loans. I am confident based on our experience to date, that our program would improve your student's completion rates, their post graduation income, and their loan repayment rates.
