FAPSC Day Festivities add Excitement and Rejuvenation for the 2012 Legislative Session

FAPSC hosted it's annual FAPSC day event on November 15th in Florida's State Capitol. We had 40 FAPSC members participate in this year event which is up from last year.  Volunteers met with over 100 local Senators and Representivies from their districts as well as the Speaker of the House, Dean Cannon and Sentate President Mike Haridopolos.

FAPSC day festivites began with an orientation on November 14th at the Double Tree hotel in Tallahassee.  The orientation was to assist new attendees as well our returing ones to brush up on key talking points and hear tips to making the most out of your visit.  Once orientation was over attendees had an opportunity to met with 19 House of Representatives that were invited to a one on one social hour.

FAPSC 2012 Legsiative agenda was discussed at each appointment along with our key message that are sector is the workforce engine and a great bargain for the taxpayers.

Claire Walker, Campus President with Rasmussen College said "excellent FAPSC HILL Day! It was very organized and each individual and large group visit was well received. We got our message out successfully. It was a pleasure representing FAPSC!"

Not only were school members representated at this years event we also had associate member Jeannie Yockey-Fine with Dow Lohnes attend.  Here is what she said "I was so impressed with all that you do! I am so glad that I got to experience some of what FAPSC does. When I was at CIE, most of my experience with FAPSC was speaking at some conferences. I knew you did a lot of great things, but still had no idea of the incredible things that you do to help so many! I am so glad that I had an opportunity to attend the board meeting and to participate in FAPSC Day. I will be helping to spread the word of the wonderfulness that is FAPSC!"

Of course, the best way to tell our story is through campus visits.  If you have not already please invite your Sentator and/or Representivies in your district  to your campus.  FAPSC created a Guide to Legislative Visit for this purpose and it's FREE to all our members!

Veteran Relies on Expertise of FAPSC School for Computer Training, Finds Perfect Fit

When Derek LeMay of Orlando, a seasoned military veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, wanted to leverage his skills in Information Technology (IT) he found a perfect fit with FAPSC member school New Horizons Computer Learning Centers at a campus in Orlando.

LeMay, a GI Bill student credits New Horizons with helping train him as an A+ Certified Technician, Network+ Certified and Security+ Professional, which ultimately helped him become a Storage Support Technician for his employer, NetApp, a national tech company that ranked No. 3 among the World’s Best Multinational Workplaces by the Great Place to Work Institute.

He explains that his military experience laid the foundation for his present career path. “Before New Horizons, I was a systems administrator in the Marine Corps for five years. After my enlistment, I started attending Valencia College working towards my associate’s degree but then decided to enroll in New Horizons instead,” he said. Among the aspects of the training at New Horizons that appealed to LeMay included the accelerated track, fast pace and the hands-on learning experience.

In addition, he said the labs are first-rate and the instructors are very professional. “Each student has their own workstation and equipment – the additional resources that New Horizons provides allows students to study in a manner that best suits their learning style,” he added.

As for job placement, he says New Horizons plugged him to a variety of IT career opportunities and even assisted with resume writing skills. This military veteran has already recommended the school to others and said he will continue to do into the future.

FAPSC supports this employed veteran and salutes all who served our country not just on Veterans’ Day, but throughout the year!

CIE Rules Committee Revising Rules

The CIE Rules Committee is revising several rules that will affect all licensed institutions. Below is a summary of the rule revisions that were approved this week during CIE rules meeting at Howie- Inn- The-Hills.

Rule 6E-1.003, Definition of Terms: The proposal adds two new definitions - one for an "additional location" and the other for a "Florida student."

Rule 6E-2.004, Standards and Procedures for Licensure: In addition to clarifying amendments, the proposal incorporates four forms that describe the methodology for calculating student placement and retention. The proposed rule also incorporates a fifth form that requires institutions to list their current assets and liabilities in order to assist the Commission in determining whether the financial standards for licensure are met.

Rule 6E-4.001, Fees and Expenses: The proposal deletes the fee charged a student when the Commission provides a student with a copy of his transcript and reduces the charge to institutions licensed-by-means of accreditation for adding or modifying a program. The proposal also corrects language describing the circumstances when fees will be reduced.

Rule 6E-4.005, Student Protection Fund; Trainout Procedures for Closure: The proposal incorporates a form that describes the methodology for determining the fee assessed schools for the Student Protection Fund (SPF). The SPF is established so that funds are available to assist a student in completing his course of study in the event an institution loses before completion of his program of study.

Please visit the Commission website for updates on definitions, requirements, and the changes in various fees and forms.

FAPSC 2012 Scholarship Program Seeking Applicants

TALLAHASSEE, FL – Nov. 7, 2011 – The Florida Association of Postsecondary Schools and Colleges (FAPSC) has begun seeking applicants for more than $1 million in scholarships provided by member schools and colleges throughout the state.

For the third year, more than $1 million is being offered to high school graduates and G.E.D. recipients to further their education through the 2012 scholarship program. Last year, only 8 percent of available scholarships were awarded.

“We are fortunate that our schools and colleges provide these opportunities for students to further their education, however, in recent years, resources were left unused because candidates were not matched with scholarships,” Wanda Minick, FAPSC deputy director, said. “Students who do apply have a good chance of earning scholarships to help with higher education costs. Forty-two percent of applicants received scholarships last year,” she added. Entering its third decade, the program has become a signature program offered by FAPSC member schools.
