The Florida Legislator Convenes the 2012 Session on January 10th!

In Tallahassee, FAPSC is gearing up for another Legislative session and keeping our members up to date and current on what is going on at your state Capitol.

Currently, the FAPSC Legislative committee meets every Friday at 10:00 AM to discuss what's on tap and keeping you updated on bills that could have a direct effect on your school and our sector. The advocacy work FAPSC does is a huge member benefit to you. Our team of lobbyists works on your behalf and if your school currently has a lobbyist then we invite them to be part of our weekly calls too. If you would like to be added to our call list please email Kathy@FAPSC.org.

It's a New Year and Time to Renew your FAPSC Membership

We thank you for your membership and your loyalty to your state association.  We're always here if you'd like to talk more about how to maximize your membership.

Here is what FAPSC is working on for 2012: 

  • Let FAPSC serve as your clearinghouse and store your earned CEU's through our secure online database. To do this you will be asked to log in and register for FAPSC hosted events. This will enable us to store your earned CEU's and gives you the ability to view them at anytime.

  • Adding a career/job board for your students to search for jobs with built in tools to assist with creating resume and cover letters. THIS WILL BE FREE TO MEMBERS!

  • Continuing our public relations efforts to provide information about our sector and quick response to criticism.

  • Meeting your professional development needs with education programs around the state. Our speakers represent more than $100,000 of talent that we bring to you at affordable event registration prices.

  • An Awards Program to honor our colleagues and our business partners, reaching out into our communities making an impact.

  • Advocacy work continues at your state Capitol to ensure students and our members receive fair treatment, access and choice.

  • Maintaining our partnership with the Higher Education Coordinating Council to guarantee all educational institutions are held to the same standards.

Deadline to renew dues is February 03, 2012

Act now to assure that you will continue to enjoy the benefits of FAPSC membership. Members who do not renew within 65 days of their expiration date will be classified as "Inactive" and will have to rejoin instead of renew. Free Event: Region II & III Career Services Workshop & Region Meeting Scheduled

FAPSC invites members and non-members to attend our Career Services Workshop, "Career Services Facts" and Region Meeting at Lincoln College of Technology West Palm Beach campus on January 31, 2012 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

This workshop offers 1 CEU and an opportunity to build stronger relationships with other career institutions within your region. We will have a panel discussion with employers to learn what they look for in new hires and discuss how we can prepare our graduates. All can benefit by attending!

Instructors are Julie Orloff. Regulatory Operations Consultant, with Career Education Corporation and Sheri D. Leach, National Director of Career Services for Lincoln Educational Services.

Cosmetology Workshop: Teaching Essential Business Skills for Success

Date: Monday, February 20, 2012
Time: 9:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Venue: The Westin Lake Mary - North Orlando, Florida

In this program, we offer ideas and solutions for teaching your students how to communicate with their customers. You’ll be able to guide them to effectively recommend services and retail products. We’ll focus on building clinic floor traffic, increasing retail sales, doubling chemical sales, finding and filling clients’ needs, and much more! You will discover how to work smarter, not harder.

 Facilitor Patti Wanamaker, Educator

Patti Wanamaker currently serves as an Academic Trainer for Milady. She is responsible for delivering academic and business programs for the Cosmetology Industry. Her intimate understanding of the salon/school/beauty industry comes from 17 years of hands-on experience, includes 8 years of salon/spa ownership, co-owner and co-manager of three salon locations with an annual sales of $5 million. She has 6 years experience as a multi-faceted, training specialist within the industry, specializing in customer relations, increasing the bottom line and creating client loyalty.

Her experience in all three areas of our industry creates a well-rounded background as a trainer.

Eight (8) CEUs will be awarded for the Commission for Independent Education requirement.
Credit towards Milady Master Educator Certification will be awarded.

News from CIE

New Commissioner Announced

Levi G. Williams is the newest Commissioner appointed by Governor Rick Scott to the Commission for Independent Education.

Williams, of Fort Lauderdale, is a partner with Levi G. Williams P.A. Previously, he practiced with Fertig and Gramling for 14 years and was an assistant state attorney for the Twentieth Judicial Circuit from 1994 to 1996. Mr. Williams was also vice president of Ambrosia Corporation and president of Anthem Inc. Williams received a bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois and law degree from the University of Florida. He succeeds Judith K. Rodgers and is appointed for a term beginning November 14, 201, and ending June 30, 2014.

CIE Rules Committee Reviews New Changes

The Commission for Independent Education rules committee assembled on January 3, 2012 at Howey In the Hills, Mission Inn Resort & Club to discuss changes that could affect current and new schools in Florida. The committee is reviewing standards of financial stability and establishing specific financial guidelines for all. Members will meet again via conference call the first week in February.

Don't miss the next Commission meeting on March 28 at Mission Inn Resort & Club, Howey In the Hills, FL. 

Also, in the news Peter Crocitto was reappointed as Chair of the Commission and Sam Lauff will sit as Vice Chair. Congratulations to you both!

Promote FAPSC 2012 Scholarship Program

If your institution is participating in this year's scholarship program we encourage you to begin promoting your scholarships and instituions. 

This year FAPSC has provided you with an electronic application. Applicants can apply directly online or they can download an application and submit via mail. The application is posted on two websites: www.FAPSC.org and FLCareers.org as well as linked through a variety of scholarship databases such as Scholarships.com, College Board, Cappex.com, Zinch.com, Peterson’s, Scholarship Experts.com, and Fastweb. We hope this will broaden the exposure and outreach of this program.

Soon you will all be receiving copies of printed applicatons, flyers, email and press release templates for your use to promote this program to your local public and private high schools, career centers, and G.E.D testing centers by making appointments to speak with career counselors or securing booth space in your community’s college fairs.

We encourage all participating schools to add a direct link to the FAPSC scholarship application for additional exposure. Also, please access the FAPSC member logo and post it on your website!

FAPSC Announces a New Community Leadership Award

New for 2012 FAPSC will recognize community leaders outside the private postsecondary education sector. This award will be in recognition for outstanding service to the community in each of the FAPSC 8 regions. Each region will have the opportunity to recognize one outstanding community award recipient and name their local award in honor or memory of someone. Students from FAPSC School Share Message at National Meeting

Student ambassadors from the Lincoln Technical Institute, who are also U.S. veterans, proudly shared their school experience during a recent meeting of the Republican State Attorney Generals in West Palm Beach. "Our students did an outstanding job in promoting the private school sector, and also representing fellow veterans," said Robert Laquerre from Lincoln Tech.

In total, five students from Lincoln Tech attended the event to share share their first-hand experiences with the AGs, including Florida's AG Pam Bondi. Pictured with Bondi are: Matthew Eso and Brian Nelson. Some of the 19 AGs who attended are former veterans as well, so it also provided an opportunity to recall their experiences serving our country.

The students were invited to attend to represent the Florida Association of Postsecondary Schools and Colleges (FAPSC) and the national association, the Association of Private Sector Colleges and Universities (APSCU). Both organizations wanted the AGs to have the opportunity to learn, first-hand, about the experiences at a member school from students who are veterans seeking higher education.

"The students who joined us were simply terrific," said Brian Newman, State Association Manager for APSCU. "They not only did an excellent job representing Lincoln Technical Institute, but thousands of other student veterans using their GI Bill benefits at APSCU member schools, institutes, colleges and universities."

Florida National College has received approval from Florida Department of CIE and SACS COC to change its name from Florida National College to Florida National University. Also, they have been approved to teach graduate program including the MBA.

If you are planning to take part please make hotel accommodation by February 03, 2012.

FAPSC Online Training Center Invites you to the Lounge

The FAPSC Online Training Center Lounge was created for the career college community to announce their learning and development interests, create learning groups and post blogs. This learner-centered component of our training center allows users to find and link up with other users with similar interests to create ad-hoc learning communities.

In addition to the structured learning and interaction opportunities offered through these courses, tutorials, lessons, and webinars, we provide an informal space for career college professionals to exercise their own thoughts, and make their own connections.
