FAPSC member ITT Technical Institute Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony Festitivies

On Tuesday, February 02, 2011 ITT Technical Institute, Tallahassee campus held it's ribbon-cutting ceremony with Tallahassee City Commissioner Gil Ziffer and distinguished guests from the Tallahassee Chamber of Commerece including President Sue Dick, and Senior Vice President of Membership Advancement, Angela Hardiman-Cole. 

Campus Director, Dan McGrew begain by welcoming all in attendance and thanking the Commissioner for taking time out of his day to attend the event.  McGrew gave attendees a campus tour and wrapped up the day's activities with a student assembly. To read more about this event click here.

The following day ITT Technical Institute hosted U.S. Representative Steve Southerland to their campus. Representative Southerland gave an inspirational address to the students. Below is a brief video clip highlighting U.S. Congressman Southerland's visit.

Nursing Workshop Huge Success

FAPSC hosted its first-ever Nursing Workshop in West Palm Beach on Jan. 24, 2011. The event was a huge success bringing in 143 attendees who took advantage of networking and learning opportunities.

The workshop kicked-off with a special pre-recorded welcome from Representative Denise Grimsley RN, District 77, House Appropriations Committee Chair. Kathy Mizereck, FAPSC’ Executive Director, led the attendees through a thorough review of Florida Nursing Education Law and the major changes from 2009 and 2010 legislation.

Dr. Patricia A. Seabrooks, Director of Education, Florida Board of Nursing covered an array of topics from the approval process for new and existing nursing programs, as well as reporting requirements and program comparisons.

Mary Ann Hogan presented an extensive overview of how to map a curriculum to the NCLEX RN and PN tests in a session sponsored by Pearson, and Pam Corrigan led attendees through a critical evaluation process of understanding how to examine their program for variables that impact NCLEX results.

FAPSC day Participants Took Florida's Capitol by Storm

On Wednesday, February 9 FAPSC members came together to spread the good news through the Florida Legislator regarding Florida's career college sector.

Over all we had around 50 participants representing 25 FAPSC member schools.  Well over 60 appointments were made with Senators and Representatives, including meetings with Speaker of the House Dean Cannon and Senate President Mike Haridopolos.

" This was my first hill day in Florida and I must say that I think it was incredible!" stated Shane Clem, RVP- Operations with Everest Florida Central Region. "I was proud to be part of something so great for our sector and was humbled by so many folks being together to discuss their passion about what we do!"

FAPSC Holds Regional Scholarship Events

FAPSC promoted our scholarship program by hosting regional events in Jacksonville, Orlando and Miramar the week of February 15-18, 2011.

Over 2,000 invitations were mailed to public and private high school principals, guidance counselors, career counselors with career academies, G.E.D. testing facilities, Adult Education and Learning Centers and workforce regions. 

Deadline for students to apply is March 11, 2011.  We hope these events will not only boost interest in the $1.5 million dollars our schools and colleges are offering but also create awareness amoung Florida high schools and other learning centers.

Realize - Resolve- React - Renew your FAPSC Membership

Renew today, and let's continue improving education and protecting the interests of your students and the members of our sector. Deadline to renew dues is February 28, 2011.

You are an important part of the association's mission, strategies and accomplishments.

Your membership has made a difference this past year - let's do it again!

Renewing your membership can be done in 4 easy steps. To renew your school or company's membership you must be the designated primary contact. If you are unsure please contact Wanda Minick at Wanda@FAPSC.org or call (850) 577-3133.

Step 1: Log into our website www.FAPSC.org (Unless you have logged in before and changed it your username is your first and last name with no spaces.  The first letter in each name is in capital letters. Ex. WandaMinick (W and M are caps- no spaces between the names).  Password is “FAPSC” in all capital letters.

Step 2: Once you log in you will be in your member portal. As the primary contact you will have a "view organization" link.  Click the "view organization" link  to view your school/company's member portal.  Click the "Renew" link to renew membership.

Step 3: This is where you will renew your membership!  The page header is "School Membership Application." Please review and make sure that all the information we have on file is correct.  If not, please make changes where necessary. Most of the information on this page will be displayed in our member directory, so it is very important that you are listed correctly. Once information is completed and verified scroll down. 

If you are renewing a school membership you will need to select your campus' gross revenue range to be assessed the appropriate membership dues.

Associate members renewing will automatically be assessed a $500 dues renewal fee. Next, you will select your response to consider making a contribution to FAPSC PAC. Then click the renew button.

Step 4:  Payment Page!  You should see your renewal amount plus the amount if you chose to contribute to FAPSC PAC. You can either pay immediately by credit card or click “bill me."  If you choose the “bill me” option you will be brought back to the organization portal, scroll down the page and view "invoices & receipts" box and click on the printer icon to display invoice for printing.  Please remit payment to FAPSC office at 150 South Monroe Street, Suite 303, Tallahassee, FL 32301 and be sure to include the invoice number on your check.

Deadline to renew dues is February 28, 2011.

Get your Engines Revvin' in 2011

Conference: FAPSC 2011 Central Florida Conference February 24th -25th. This year's host hotel is The Westin Lake Mary, North Orlando.  FAPSC Continuing Education Committee has been working feverishly to make this conference lineup one of the best yet.

FAPSC will kick off the conference Thursday with Administrator Day.  School owners and directors, directors of admissions, marketing, financial aid, student services can come learn and earn 8 CEU's along with networking with your colleagues.  We will wrap up the conference with Faculty Day on Friday.  Deans of academics, education directors, professors, and faculty are encouraged to participate on this day as they will be awarded  8 CEU's upon completion of a day chockful of learning labs and instruction they can take back to the classroom and implement.

FAPSC 2010 Spotlight on Award Winner

Each year FAPSC opens nominations to the general membership to honor colleagues in the career college sector.  These awards are announced at our annual conference.  This year our conference was held in Hollywood, Florida on July 13-16, 2010.  Since some of you did not get a chance to attend this event we will highlight an award winner each month in our e-Flash. This month we highlight The Gail Benjamin Student Services Administrator of the Year Award presented to Eden Klinedinst, Everest University-Tampa

Eden Klinedinst stands for honesty, integrity and high moral standards and excels in all of these areas. She has contributed to the development of a tutoring service for potential Ability to Benefit students before they take the entrance exam.

Ms. Klinedisnt makes all students feel welcome at tutoring and provides the individual attention they need, and finds the additional resources to assist students in tutoring to ensure they understand the material and are prepared for a successful testing experience.
With her dedicated efforts, her campus has constantly maintained a pass rate of 50% or higher. She works hard to find resources within the community for our students to ensure they can succeed such as seeking out auto repair facilities, day care facilities that will offer discounts to our students. She has also been instrumental in securing low cost housing for our students.

FAPSC Online Training Center Admissions Course Approved by the Commission

As of February 01, 2011 The Commission for Independent Education rule 6E-1.0032 requires training for “all staff who recruit prospective students or who participate in the admission of prospective students, at the institution.” Click here to read the rule in depth.

FAPSC has such a CIE-approved program already in place! Our online training center course CM201 - Admission Training Program, covers admissions requirements from catalog to enrollment. It provides admissions staff with regulatory requirements information to comply in all areas of their jobs. The course also shows participants how to learn the specifics about their institution's organizational structure, policies, procedures, educational programs, and services. Lastly, participants learn how to remain current with institutional and regulatory mandates.

This course requires a purchase of one enrollment key per person.

Southwest Florida College Hires a New Director of Industry Partnership and Graduate Placement

Please join us in welcoming Stephen Tirey, former CEO and President of The Chamber of Southwest Florida as their new Director of Industry Partnerships and Graduate Placement. Mr. Tirey has served as the CEO of the chamber since 1989 and has worked with many business and political leaders throughout the state.  In his new role, Mr. Tirey will concentrate on pulling together all of the college's graduate placement activities and will assist the Southwest Florida College in obtaining strategic industry partners, employer endorsements for every program of instruction, expanding externships and cooperative education, and development of an active alumni network. 

FULL SAIL NEWS ALERT

Full Sail University graduate Gary Rizzo has been named as an OSCAR® nominee in the category of Best Achievement in Sound Mixing for his work on Inception. This is Gary’s 3rd Academy Award nomination as he was also nominated for The Incredibles (2004) and for Batman: The Dark Knight (2008).

More details about Full Sail graduates’ contributions to this year’s Academy Award nominated projects are forthcoming.
