Did You Get your Engines Revvin’?

FAPSC celebrated “Driving Student Success” August 3 – 5 in Aventura, Florida at the FAPSC Annual Conference.  It was truly a remarkable educational event with federal updates, insights regarding gainful employment, admissions compliance, clock to credit hour regulations and much more!  More than 450 administrators participated in these very timely and valuable educational sessions including keynote presentations from Diane Auer Jones (Vice President at Career Education Corporation and former US DOE Assistant Secretary for Postsecondary Education) and Dr. Jean Norris and Vince Norton (Managing Partners, Norton Norris, Inc).

Our exhibit hall was sold out with a festive array of car-racing activities and networking opportunities.  It was truly an exciting worthwhile learning experience for all!  Thirteen amazing administrators and faculty as well as a student from our sector were recognized by their peers during the Annual Award Programs.

The Faculty Conference welcomed over 325 instructors who enjoyed a variety of sessions meant to enhance their teaching skills and provide new ideas for their day-to-day instruction and curriculum.  The conference kicked off with a fun filled and interactive keynote session (sponsored by Pearson), “Tuning into WIIFM – Delivering Compelling Content with Real-World Relevance!” presented by Tom Leu, Distance Learning Department Chair, Rockford Career College.

A special thanks to the many sponsors and exhibitors who supported this event.  We could not hold our annual conference without you!

And a very special thanks to the volunteers and speakers who dedicated their time and expertise to making this event a success.  We hope to see everyone back at the Fairmont Turnberry Isle Resort & Club for the 2012 Annual Conference – July 25-27!

Many of the conference presentations are available for download on our website!

APSCU 2011: Dealing with New Advertising Guidelines

Contribuited by Mitch Talendfeld, CEO, MDT Direct

MDT Direct was approached after their recent APSCU Internet advertising panel to write an article summarizing the session, MDT's recent research and perception of the new regulatory advertising environment. We think that you will find it of interest.

The new regulations set forth by the Department of Education were on everyone’s mind at the 2011 APSCU Convention. Higher education marketers and education institutions must be diligent to include the correct disclosures and avoid any advertising that may be construed as misleading. The broad definition presented by the DOE has created confusion for many as to what is required of them and this sparked numerous lively discussions, permeated almost every speaking session.

What We Learned at APSCU
Our breakout session; Fixing the Student Recruitment Problem: Best Practices Initiatives by Institutions and their Vendors, sought to help dispel some of the rumors and set the record straight for institutions in search of how to handle Internet vendors in the face of the new regulations. Internet inquiry generation takes many forms, and sometimes these practices are not well understood by institutions. Changes to federal regulations make institutions responsible, however, whether erroneous recruitment practice is intentionally misleading or not. Steps are being taken both by the vendor (Education Marketing Council) and the school (APSCU Student Recruitment Task Force) communities to improve the situation for all.

The biggest disconnect seemed to be between institutions' need for information and Internet companies looking to find ways to continue business as usual. Unfortunately, the business model that works so well for the vendors provides the institutions with little control over the online advertising associated with the school’s name.  Click here to read the article in its entirety.
