Freddy Barton - Director of Operations Corporation to Develop Communities of Tampa
Freddy Barton is the Director of Operations for the Corporation to Develop Communities of Tampa, Inc., (CDC of Tampa). In his role he is responsible for the management of Real Estate Development, Career and Job Training Services, Foreclosure Prevention Services, Financial Literacy and Homebuyer Education, Youth Program Development and Commercial Property Development and Management. Over the past four years, he has helped grow the organization from a $1.2 to $2.5 million dollar budget through social enterprise and fee for service models, transitioning from its former grant driven model. Since 1992, CDC of Tampa has served as the anchor in East Tampa for community development and stabilization.
In 2012, he along with CEO Ernest Coney, ,Jr., created Tampa Vocational Institute as a means to address the skills gap in East Tampa and surrounding areas. Concentrating only on specific training requested from employer partners, TVI began trainings in Customer Service & Sales, Call Center Training, Construction Trades and Desktop Productivity courses. In recent years, other programs have been created in partnership with employer partners to bring federal grant dollars to the local area, such as the Compressed Natural Gas – Fuel Station Attendant and Mechanic. In 2013, the Federal Transit Authority awarded the CDC of Tampa and TVI, in partnership with Hillsborough Area Regional Transit (HART) a grant opportunity to provide training for new hires as well as incumbent drivers, fuel station attendants, mechanics and administrative personnel. In 2014, the Environmental Protection Agency selected TVI as an sub-awardee to provide Brownsfield Safety and Awareness Training.
Focusing on employer and industry specific training, TVI builds a network of employment opportunities through its Employer Advisory Committee, a cohort of 20+ employers that help review curriculums, identify training trends, and assist in screening and interviewing potential students. Using this model as well as other initiatives, TVI has been able to place over 75% of its graduates since 2013.
When Freddy is not managing CDC of Tampa and TVI, he spends his free time with his family, riding motorcycles and fishing.
