New Statutory Requirements that Effect how CIE Collects Data from Schools

On May 20, 2013 Governor Rick Scott approved SB 1720 which amends s.1005.22, F.S.; revising the duties of the Commission for Independent Education with regards to collecting and distributing current data. Currently CIE collect data from institutions whose students receive state funds.  Due to this new law more date reporting will required.

This bill also requires the Commission for Independent Education to adopt rules to implement penalties relating to reporting of child abuse, abandonment, or neglect.

Due to these new requirements CIE and FAPSC will host a series of regional workshops around the state to educate schools on the necessary data that you will need to collect along with all reporting requirements to keep your school compliant.

FAPSC will be reaching out to our members asking if your school would be interested in hosting any of these events. If so, please contact Wanda Minick, Deputy Executive Director | Member Services at or call (850) 577-3139.

How the FTC Revised Dot Com Disclosures Affect our Members

It is the sign of the times. Our society is more mobile friendlier than ever and we are just getting started.  As a result in March of this year the Federal Trade Commission, (FTC) released new guidance for mobile and other online advertisers that explains how to make disclosures clear and conspicuous to avoid deception.  Since most of our members use mobile and other online sources to advertis, FAPSC wanted to make you aware of some of the changes that could affect the way your school or company advertises. Under the new guidance, advertisers should ensure that the disclosure are clear and conspicuous on all devices and platforms that consumers may use to view the ad. The new guidance also explains that if an advertisement without a disclosure would be deceptive or unfair, or would otherwise violate a Commission rule, and the disclosure cannot be made clearly and conspicuously on a device or platform, then that device or platform should not be used.

Some of the other changes that you should be made aware is to avoid the use of hyperlinks for disclosures that involve product cost or certain health and safety issues and provides guidelines for labeling hyperlinks, and caution advertisers to consider how their hyperlinks will function on various programs and devices. Click here to download a copy of the guidlines .com Disclosures to make sure you are in compliance.

The Federal Trade Commission works for consumers to prevent fraudulent, deceptive, and unfair business practices and to provide information to help spot, stop, and avoid them.

Reverend Al Sharpton and National Action Network's First Annual Unity Summit Presented by Dade Medical College and the University of Southernmost Florida

June 03, 2013

MIAMI, FL- On May 30th, Reverend Al Sharpton, along with members of the National Action Network, Dade Medical College ("DMC") students and staff, DMC President Ernesto Perez, and Bishop Victor T. Other discussion leaders were also given the opportunity to share their own thoughts and insights regarding higher education opportunities for minority students.

Following the exchange, the National Action Network hosted its first annual Unity Summit at the Westin Colonnade in Coral Gables. A round-table discussion led by Reverend Sharpton, Bishop Curry, Ernesto Perez, state-elected officials, and county commissioners was held in order to heighten awareness of the merits of the for-profit university system.
