SB4 (Galvano, R-Bradenton), a bill that would expand the Bright Futures scholarship program, was victorious in its third and concluding committee on Wednesday, December 6th. The next stop for the bill is the Senate floor.

Senate President Joe Negron, R-Stuart, has made higher education a priority during his term as Senate President.

The bill would allow for the Academic Scholar award to cover 100% of tuition, $300 per semester for books, and also allow the awards to be used during summer terms. The Medallion Scholar award would cover 75% of tuition and certain educational fees.

In addition, the bill would extend the Benacquisto Scholarship Program to certain highly qualified students from out of state and establish a program for Florida farmworkers and their children.

The 2018 legislative session runs from January 9 – March 9, 2018.
