Curtis Austin: State’s health care needs require more nurses - News Herald

"The reporter writing about the challenges facing nursing education in Florida (“More nursing schools on probation,” Dec. 8) missed the real issue: How can the state find enough qualified professionals to care for our growing and aging population? ....The law that expanded career schools’ role in nursing has been successful. Almost half the growth in professional nursing has come from the private sector. "

Moving from Passive to Active Learning

This article was contributed by Robert Starks Jr., Vice President of Learning Initiatives with MaxKnowledge, Inc.

The “sage on the stage” method of teaching in which an expert attempts to pour knowledge into the minds of students through lecture is not only boring, it’s ineffective. In fact, twenty minutes of listening to a lecture is the maximum amount of time that students can process information effectively according to research cited in Does Active Learning Work, A Review of the Research (Prince, 2004). If passive learning is all about listening, what is active learning?

Bonwell & Eison (1991) define active learning as “students [that are] engaged in more activities than just listening. They are involved in dialog, debate, writing, and problem solving, as well as higher-order thinking, e.g., analysis, synthesis, evaluation.” Studies have demonstrated that an active learning approach can lead to better student attitudes and improvements in students’ thinking and writing. Additionally, discussion, one form of active learning, has been shown to surpass traditional lectures for retention of material motivating students for further study and developing thinking skills.

How can instructors make learning active? To learn more, consider the online courses EL113 – Active Learning in an Online Environment and ED111 – Active Learning Methods available in the FAPSC Online Training Center.

CGS!Florida volunteers needed- Have You Signed Up?

Office of Student Financial Assistance (OSFA) excited to be working with Florida’s College Goal Sunday initiative, CGS!Florida. Here comes the part where YOU can help!  FAPSC member Herzing University has been selected as one of the hosts sites. Heather Antonacci, MBA, Herzing Orlando Campus President invites other FAPSC schools that are interested to attend the event and help the attendees complete their online FAFSA application to sign up and volunteer!

"This is strictly an event in which you can give back to the community and put a positive spin on for-profit schools" stated Ms. Antonacci.  If you are interested in participating please contact Ms. Antonacci at (407) 215-9705 or via email

The link below gives more information on what CGS is. They are expecting a very large turnout and would love to have Financial Aid experts from other schools available to assist future students.!FLORIDA/StudentsAndFamily.aspx

Other host sites can be viewed online at:!FLORIDA/Locations.aspx and YOU can register for an event online at:!FLORIDA/Volunteers.aspx.

We need roughly 1 Financial Aid staff member for every 8 students the host sites expect to serve, so we need a significant number of volunteers to help out. There will be a line-by-line FAFSA training webinar provided to all volunteers, so YOU do not have to be an expert to help out.

Please sign up today and encourage your co-workers to do the same! Let’s do this!

If you have any questions, or need further information, please do not hesitate to contact Lori Auxier, CEPF, Director of Outreach Services with the Florida Department of Education -Office of Student Financial Assistance (OSFA) at 561-357-6340.

Students Using Adaptive Multimedia Achieve Higher Completion and Retention Rates

January 07, 2014

Rochester, NY – Adapt Courseware, the provider of comprehensive adaptive multimedia that individualizes each student’s learning experience, has released its most recent student completion and retention data for the 2012-2013 academic year. Participating schools achieved, on average, a 16% higher course completion rate for students using the company’s adaptive multimedia compared to students enrolled in online sections using conventional curriculum. Term-over-term retention rates for students using adaptive multimedia averaged 18% higher than for students in the control sections, and every school that participated in the research produced double digit gains in retention. The improved outcomes were statistically reliable at the 92% and 97% confidence level, respectively.
