  Don Jones was truly born into the sector. After completing his service as a US Army Officer in 1969 (Viet Nam’67-‘68) and law school, when he became assistant dean and general counsel at Ft. Lauderdale College in 1975, making him the third generation of Jones in the business.

Don has spent over 40 years actively working in the sector. As CEO of the Compass Rose Foundation, a position he assumed in 1979, he has overseen the 1989 launch of International College (now Hodges University) in Naples; the governance of Southwest Florida Colleges in Ft. Myers & Tampa; the acquisition (2003) and governance of Sunstate Academy with Cosmetology schools along Florida’s West Coast and more recently the newly launched Jones Technical Institute (J-Tech) in Jacksonville, offering programs in Diesel Technology and Commercial Truck Driving.

Regardless of the curriculum, these institutions have remained true to their missions of helping students succeed in school and in life. They maintain close ties with their industry partners are sensitive to change, not only in industry, but in student demographics. They were early in studying millennials and shared their information with FAPSC members through sessions conducted at conferences.

Don has been a member of FAPSC since 1976 and served in various capacities on the board and as president from 1985 to 1987. In addition to his work with FAPSC, he has proven his commitment to the sector by serving AICS (now ACICS) as a commissioner from 1982-88 (chair 1988), and on the AICS Board 1988-89. He was an early member of ACICS’s Distance Education Committee (1984-1985). He was a Florida State Board for Independent Colleges and Universities member from 1980-1988 (chair 1985-1988). He has been an active member of the Private Educators’ Research Council (PERC) since 1987.

Under Don’s governance, the Compass Rose Foundation was the founder and incubator of the Learning Information Resources Network (LIRN).

Consistently, Don Jones and his team have made themselves, facilities, and employees available to FAPSC and FAPSC members. Service to others seems to be in their DNA.
